Maniac: Miniseries Reviews

October 9, 2018
Maniac is the rare series that plays with reality without alienating the viewer emotionally.

Underneath the pop-cultural mille-feuille, though, is an essentially simple story, and it's what makes the final chapters of Maniac more affecting and absorbing than the earlier episodes.

The show is filled with connections and callbacks that reward repeat viewing.

Stone is built for this kind of project, having demonstrated in films as varied as La La Land and Birdman that she can be a classic leading lady or a grubby character actress, a girl next door or a glamour puss.
September 23, 2018
Maniac is a big, weird, tightly controlled mess of a show.
September 21, 2018
At once a self-help drama about personal faith and a wry metaphysical mind-bender, Maniac is about world-building-about giving an inner life a semblance of coherent narrative, about the stories we tell ourselves in order to get by.
September 21, 2018
Apart from its sheer, audacious entertainment value, it's poignant in a bittersweet way. Highly recommended.
September 21, 2018
Vibrant, ridiculous and, to varying degrees, moving.
September 21, 2018
While the leads, especially Stone, are fine, their performances sometimes struggle against the off-kilter nature of the material.

The acting is, as expected, potent, with Gabriel Byrne and Sally Field also onboard, and the visuals are transporting, as they lure us into a strangely futuristic world filled with remnants of the 1980s.

Maniac, for its part, throws down a tale that swerves to the left and swerves to the right without ever losing velocity. But seeing is believing while not believing what you're seeing is also part of the experience.

Form follows function, and as its heroes reckon with the confusing beauty of their own minds, the viewer reckons with the strange allure of this oddball TV show.

Maniac represents a welcome return to form for Netflix.

It's hypnotizing eye candy that won't completely nourish the brain or the soul, but it will satiate them for a little bit.

It's a heart-shaped Rubik's Cube, a funny, consistently surprising fable of broken machines trying to reassemble themselves.
September 20, 2018
Maniac plays with genre and dramatic expectations to gain insight into the human condition in ways that other programs can't touch.
September 19, 2018
The visuals in Maniac were always going to be the first thing anyone talked about, and probably rightly so... The issue for Maniac is whether all of the high gloss and megawatt star turns can leave room for the big ideas to land.

Dive in, don't think, enjoy. You most likely will, by the way.

It never quite adds up to as much as it aspires to, but it's just so weird, gorgeous, surprising and, yes, fun that the hollowness ultimately didn't bother me that much. The emperor's new clothes may be invisible, but goddamn do they look good on him.

September 17, 2018
The show is half-baked and inconsistent: we've got a sad man and a badass woman, but they never feel like more than conceits, pre-stocked with conflict and resolution.
September 14, 2018
For all its manic poses and deflationary snark, it's ultimately patronizingly sentimental.

For those looking to study a TV show, look no further. For those looking to fall in love, well, there's no pill for that.

As a trial of something new, Maniac passes every test, and ascends instantly to take its place among the very best TV of the year.

"Maniac" starts off too absorbed in its own complicated structure, but once Owen and Annie are strapped in at the lab... the show becomes a visually compelling romp through highly detailed dreams and personal discoveries.

Trippy, twisty.
