It's no longer in the shadow of Breaking Bad. Instead, Better Call Saul has taken it's rightful place as one of the best dramas on television.

It is a fascinating profile of interesting characters, now offered to us again on an interesting plate of dark consciences.

Saul Goodman is simmering. And that's why his series is so good. [Full Review in Spanish]

And for me, for whatever reason, this is as good as it all gets. Not just TV as the new novel, but as something far beyond.

There isn't another show that so willingly risks your devotion, only to win it unconditionally.

Better Call Saul may never rival the epic bloodshed of its parent series, but the show is often devastating in more understated ways. And the show's existential dread has never felt more apparent than at Season 4's end.

Here's hoping Season 5 will be the year all that setup, all that pent-up emotional drama and mystery, finally pays off.

Given the inventive skills of Gilligan and Gould and the marvelous playing by Bob Odenkirk as Jimmy...I remain just as hooked now as when it began over three years ago.
August 3, 2018
Odenkirk has never been better; he somehow makes compartmentalization gripping.

Don't put a hat on a hat, at least not yet. Better Call Saul can and has stood on its own two feet; like Jimmy, it doesn't need any more help from its big brother.

Season 4 will likely continue to dish out details about Gus' past and as long as the series continues to show restraint in its use of one of its most iconic characters, audiences will continue to reap the benefits.

Better Call Saul season 4 is born in fire, and the episodes that follow are left sifting through the ashes.

A uniquely American television world in which it's impossible to not tell a compelling story... It's the storytelling infrastructure. It can no longer fail - it has ceased to have the capacity to be anything other than one of TV's best shows.

As the series' fourth season inflicts real tragedy upon its characters, it's a catalyst for listlessness-and in Better Call Saul, idle hands are the Devil's workshop in BCS and everyone's open for business.
October 10, 2018
In showing us one individual's preordained moral downfall, Better Call Saul spent Season 4 demonstrating how a hypocritical criminal justice system can ensnare a whole class of people for life.
August 6, 2018
Gilligan's skill as a storyteller has always been to wriggle out of corners he's painted himself into, and with McKean's departure from the cast, he turned what could've been a fatal blow into an opportunity for reflection and growth.
July 23, 2018
The reflection of life seen in Better Call Saul's mirror isn't terribly flattering, but perhaps more than any other TV show on the air, it stands out as true.

Old dynamics flip, long-gestating character studies pay off, and feelings geyser up in surprising places.

They have a pretty good sense of when to give the candy, and when not to, and I don't think they'll overplay their hand. It also makes me appreciate a character like Nacho...

The scenes should be drab, but the work is so lovingly filmed that you come away convinced that making a Classic Roll would feel like a consummate human achievement.
