The film seems more interested in selling Queen albums to a new generation than it is depicting the complexities of the men who helped to change the face of rock music.

People can bop to the music, see an imitation of their beloved frontman, and have the script pump inspirational narratives into their minds. For people who have always carried a love for Mercury and his fellow misfits, the film feels empty and shallow.

It's not real. It's not honest. It lacks the magic to live forever.

For a man and a band that were so groundbreaking, so fixated on musical revolution, this is supremely cheap work.

The kind of show-the-work exhausting 'meticulously-detailed imitation of a famous dead person's widely-remembered mannerisms' performance that's been known to induce priapic erections in Academy Awards voters.

More like Bohemian Parody.

To think about how much is missing from Bohemian Rhapsody hurts, not simply because it doesn't paint a full picture of the man we know as Freddie Mercury, but because it paints something that doesn't feel honest.

Malek's sublime performance and the smashing soundtrack of Queen's greatest hits are ultimately masking a generic, by-the-numbers film that consistently plays it far too safe.

Rami Malek is terrific playing Queen frontman Freddie Mercury, that's for sure, but the movie itself falls short of the intended mark. It simply has very little to say about its subject.

Bohemian Rhapsody fancies itself like the song, ranging a gambit of genres at an inexplicable fashion and expecting its audience to love the certain absurdity of it all.

With Bohemian Rhapsody, what we have here is a dumb and obvious film that features a number of strong performances and Queen's astounding music. It's a highly entertaining bad movie that often works in spite of itself.

Bohemian Rhapsody desperately wants the accolade of being a greatest hits album, and ends up playing more like a one hit wonder.

The film suffers from the utterly poor direction of Bryan Singer.

Bohemian Rhapsody may get us to raise our voices and sing, but it won't make us raise our eyebrows in piqued interest beyond the music.

The problem is, inevitably the songs end. And when they do, you might wish you'd just put on a record instead.

There's nothing interesting or exciting about this portrayal of Freddie Mercury. He's a bystander in his own life, flitting from moment to moment until the movie dials up another Queen performance.

It's cautious and inoffensive. And that's exactly why it's so disappointing. The Freddie Mercury biopic is the antithesis of its subject's abundant energy, his fearless artistry.

Bohemian Rhapsody is the fast food of music biopics. It looks delicious in its advertisements, but is ultimately tasteless and leaves you with nothing but dissatisfaction.

The film boasts a wonderful lead performance from Rami Malek, but its clichéd narrative and sloppy, safe storytelling let down the larger-than-life figure at its center.
